Carbonless copy paper eliminates carbon sheets through a two-component chemical system. The top sheet (CB — Coated Back) carries a layer of microcapsules filled with colorless dye precursor on its reverse side. The middle sheet (CFB — Coated Front and Back) has a reactive clay coating on its face and dye capsules on its reverse. The bottom sheet (CF — Coated Front) carries only the reactive coating. When pressure is applied — handwriting, dot-matrix printing, or impact typewriter — the microcapsules burst, the dye precursor transfers to the reactive coating below, and a chemical reaction produces a permanent colored image. The process cascades through each ply simultaneously, creating up to six identical copies in a single impression, with no carbon smudging between sheets.
