Berberine, a quaternary ammonium alkaloid isolated from Phellodendron chinense, is the main effective component of Coptis antibacterial. It has inhibitory effect on Shigella, Escherichia coli, Pneumococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Typhoid Bacillus and Amoeba.
